In Ontario, the Education Act puts this plainly: the purpose of education is to help every student realize their potential. After nearly two decades in classrooms, starting in 1997 with independent schools, and 2007 in public education, I have seen how easily we drift into product-forward teaching. Checklists, compliance, and incentives that measure everything except what matters most.

What’s broken in the day-to-day classroom

You feel it when you spend your prep time building rubrics instead of relationships. When students ask ‘does this count?’ before they ask ‘does this matter?’ When parents hear nothing meaningful from school until report card season.

Parents feel it too. When their child comes home disengaged, when the language of school feels foreign, when they sense something is off, they often lack the words to name it.

Why this work matters to me

Across these years, from small, independent schools to large public ones, I kept returning to the same question: what does it actually mean to help a student realize their potential? The answer is not a mark. It is not a product. It is a person who understands their own mind well enough to direct their own learning.

I’ve also worked with educators who care deeply and are exhausted. Teachers who want to do meaningful work but feel buried in expectations that have nothing to do with learning. Inner Forge Learning exists for them too.
